Spice it up with Daniele’s habanero peppers
In earlier Grow Stories, we met people who turned their plant hobby into a profession or made collecting plants their passion. Daniele channels his passion into Habanero’s Farm, where he grows premium peppers for his restaurant. For him, a dream has become reality.

So you run your own pepper farm? Tell me how you came up with that.
Well, I’m a restaurant chef. I have lived in a small village since I was born near the Eugan hills in the province of Padua in Italy. The idea for Habanero… I came into contact with Mexican culture and the world of spicy food. In the following years I went to Mexico a few times to pay specific attention to the culinary aspect. So I discovered a true passion for peppers and I started my first culture. That was a game on the balcony, but soon it became a vegetable garden and after a few years I managed to stomp a plantation from the ground.
What fascinates you so much about peppers?
They are beautiful, colorful and the tastes of peppers are not really known in this part of the world. My great ambition and challenge is to make the culture of spicy food more known in Northeast Italy. That’s why Habanero’s Farm is really a dream come true for me!
I think it’s important to stay green. Out of respect for the environment in which we live, I do not use pesticides or other harmful substances in my culture. The packaging I use to store and sell my peppers is made of durable and recyclable material.
Thanks to my experience as a cook, I could make jam and spicy sauces with the peppers right from the start. The use of spicy ingredients, even in sweet dishes, delivers an authentic and original product. Thus, the world of spicy food becomes accessible to everyone.
How long have you been doing this?
My first experiments in pots on the balcony were about five years ago. The plantation Habaneros Farm was created in February 2019.
“Plantage” sounds really big. How much do you grow?
Last year I had 95 varieties of peppers. About 6,000 plants. This year I really end up in the world of large-scale cultivation and distribution with 120 varieties and 18000 plants!
Wow! What are you gonna do with so many peppers?
I usually sell the peppers fresh or dried and ground. In addition, we process the peppers in cream or fresh fruit jams and pepper oil. Moreover, today we make a spicy salami with meat from local certified products. I do not want to get ahead of myself, but the next goal is a line of different kinds of sweet and spicy chocolate.
What species are you growing at the moment?
I now have plants of the varieties Annum, Chinense and Baccatum are on the plantation.
Why do you use Plagron products?
Habanero’s Farm and Plagron share the same ideas and take care of the final product. After a number of tests of substrates and fertilizers I chose Plagron because they are highly effective products with high quality. I just want to use the best stuff on Habanero.
And how long have you been using our products?
I’ve been using Plagron for three years now. I started using some of your products after advice from your representatives, and those products are still the only ones I use to grow Habanero.
What products do you use?
I use many Plagron products for every life stage of the plants. Seedbooster Plus for germinating. As substrates I always use Lightmix and Growmix, both with perlite. For basic food I use Terra Grow and Terra BloomCombined with Power Roots and Green Sensation for strong flowering and fruiting. I want to Sugar Royal To test! Hopefully I can boost the Brix-value of the peppers to give them a flavor boost. Of course I use all those products in large quantities and I am happy with large capacity sizes. Less bottles means less plastic and easier mixing.
Why choose Lightmix and Growmix over the other substrates?
I choose those Plagron substrates because they are pure and have good structure and lightness. They also have good water retention and they absorb nutrients well. In short, they are just perfect for the peppers on Habanero.
How far do you hope to be when we come next time?
I entrust the growth of my plants to Plagron. It’s as simple as that. So in the next few conversations, I expect to be able to prove to you what I told you with photos of a healthy and constantly growing plantation.
